I am always interested in when I need to βmakeβ my child do things, versus letting them try things. For instance I make the go to swimming lessons, since I consider that a life skill, but I would not make them be on a swim team unless they wanted to.
Good point, Caitlin. I've been thinking about that this summer. I haven't made my son take swimming classes (yet) and see he's enjoying the water and learning lots through play. I wonder if he could pick up enough to become a confident swimmer without formal classes? I doubt it, but I'm also a poor swimmer who endured rare swimming classes at school so what do I know?!
