Great article! I was homeschooled. My three oldest children go to school but I plan to homeschool my youngest two. There are so many different thoughts and styles now though. I’ve come across Unschooling before but never really paid close attention as it didn’t seem like a valid option, but this article has me rethinking some things. Thank you!
Thank you for reading, Amanda! I'd be curious to know your thought process. One thing I gather from talking to people who homeschool / unschool is that things change along with their children's / family's needs, so they don't necessarily stick to one "style" or approach.
Unschooling seemed too Willy-nilly for me. How on earth would you make sure that they learned everything they needed to? I’m more a schedule/organized person. I like to be able to check things off a list and know for sure that we’ve hit certain topics. That being said, I know that kid, especially young kids, learn more through play. Unschooling certainly fits that idea better, and done right they would still gain all the skills they needed. I can definitely see our style and approach to homeschool changing as we go: as I adjust to the role of teacher, as the kids’ interests and attention spans change, and as our confidence as homeschoolers grows. It will be a constantly evolving process.
This was an excellent post, Tania -- so much food for thought here. I don't regret homeschooling for the year we did it (for Covid-related reasons, so not even "real" homeschooling in many ways), and I don't regret sending my kids to school. Both have a lot of merit and it depends so much on each individual family and situation. (It's interesting to me that homeschooling is viewed very differently in Europe... it's pretty much exploding in popularity here in the U.S.)
I think homeschooling has definitely been on the rise (at least in France, possibly in other parts of Europe), especially with the pandemic, but still represents a tiny, tiny minority.
Wow, this is an incredible article! I can’t believe I got to be a part of it ♥️ It’s incredible to read from unschooling families all over the world!
Pourgues sounds like an absolute dream; I love the emphasis on intrinsic motivation. And that book recommendation list is gold.
I can’t believe how much work and research you put into this, Tania! Your journalistic skills and dedication blow me away. This is a very important piece that I will be pointing people to for a long time. 🙌🏼
Have you ever the read The Awakening of Miss Prim?
First time I hear of it! Added to my list :)
